Biography

Dr. Ehud D. Karnin leads the Technical Strategy and Planning for the IBM Haifa Research Lab. Ehud has BSc and MSc degrees in electrical engineering from the Technion, Israel Institute of Technology, an MSc degree in statistics and a PhD in electrical engineering from Stanford University. He joined IBM Research at the Almaden Research Lab upon completion of his PhD, and moved to the Haifa Research Lab in 1984. (With an assignment to IBM Watson Lab, NY, during '88 -'89) Ehud has worked in the areas of cryptography, information theory and compression, image processing (applications in document processing, visual inspection, optical lithography, electron beam lithography, and more), 3D scene rendering on shared memory architecture. He managed the multimedia department, which is engaged in voice recognition and synthesis, audio and video compression and streaming. He then managed the signal processing and image technologies department, leading the development of document processing technologies, aimed at the extraction of data from business documents. The technologies developed by this R&D department have found their way into IBM products, solutions and service offerings. Ehud has published numerous journal and conference papers, and, thanks to his many patents, he is an IBM Master Inventor. He is a senior adjunct lecturer at the Technion, Israel Institute of Technology, where he has been teaching courses in signal processing, and has supervised graduate student dissertations.
