Biography

Eugene Walach was born in 1952 in Lvov ,Ukraine. He received his B.Sc, M.Sc, and PhD degrees from the Technion, Israel Institute of Technology in 1973, 1975, and 1981 respectively. From 1981-1983 he was a Chaim Weizmann postdoctoral fellow at Stanford University. He joined IBM in 1983, where he has since held various technical and managerial positions at IBM Research - Haifa. Dr. Walach’s research activities focus on the area of medical imaging, document image processing, and adaptive systems. In particular he has led technical development in a number of large IBM projects in forms processing (for population censuses, tax returns, and postal applications). He is currently the technical lead of the Medical Sieve grand challenge project aimed at creating a cognitive radiology assistant. The idea is to combine clinical and image data in order to obtain differential diagnosis and recommendations for patient management. In the context of medical image processing, Dr.Walach has written a number of works on imaging ultrasonic attenuation. In addition he has worked on CAD (Computer Aided Diagnosis) of lung and heart CT images Past activities include work in the area of service sciences with a focus on business process automation and optimization, including introduction of novel service paradigms. In this context he developed the concept of Virtual Service Delivery Centers. Dr. Walach has authored a book and over 100 scientific papers and patents.
