Research Interest

My work is focused on two main fields: (1) The urban realm and society (i.e., public space, conflicts and dissent). This body of empirically based research is more theoretical and addresses the contemporary dynamics between urban space, society and technology. (2) Urban development and city design (i.e., housing and industrial areas, Smart cities). This field of research includes design-research projects funded by various agencies (municipalities and governmental institutions). Key projects includes: Dissent in Public Space - An empirical qualitative study, conducted in 10 countries (with a team of research assistances/translators), funded by the EU, that analyses the physicality of protest by assessing the relationships between physical space and the process of planning protests. Industrial Urbanism - A collaborative project, with Prof. Eran Ben Joseph (MIT), which examines various prototypes of the city–industry relationship. The project main goal is to improve understanding of city–industry dynamics and to promote manufacturing as a key to the development of future cities. Smart Cities Cyber Security (SCCS) - Cotemporary challenge is to develop smart cities that enjoy the benefits of big data while avoiding its pitfalls, namely, among other things, being sensitive to privacy and cyber security attacks. This collaborative research project (Tali Hatuka, Urban Planning; Eran Toch, Engineering; Michael Birnhack, and Issi Rosen-Zvi, Law School) investigate SCCS from several interrelated dimensions: planning, technology, social policy, local government law, and privacy law, applying diverse research methods, and aiming to offer a multi-faceted toolkit for the optimal design of SCCS. Agonistic Engagement in Post-Migrant Societies – A A collaborative project with Professor Tanja Thomas (University of Tuebingen) and Fabian Virchow (Hochschule Düsseldorf, HSD), funded by GIF. This project posits ideas at the frontier of social sciences by addressing the concept of agonism and the place of political action in general and of political protest in particular.
