Yifat Monnickendam

Biography

Yifat Monnickendam is a visiting lecturer with a joint appointment at the Faculty of Law and the Department of Jewish History. She teaches courses in late antique law and history (Jewish, Christian and Roman) and Canon law. Her main field of interest is the evolving Christian legal tradition in its Jewish and Roman late antique context. Her current research project, entitled “Hidden Law,” is sponsored by the European Commission (Marie Curie Career Integration Grant). In this project she focuses on the developments and changes in family law in Christian, Roman and Jewish legal thought and practice in the fourth to the sixth centuries, as a test case for understanding the evolution of independent Christian legal traditions and their relations to imperial Roman law and Jewish law. She earned her PhD at Bar Ilan University, was a Crane Foundation Post-doctoral Fellow at the Jewish Studies Program at Johns Hopkins University and a Post-doctoral Fellow at the Martin Buber Society of Fellows at the Hebrew University of Jerusalem.
