Biography

Aboca S.p.A. was founded in 1978 by Valentino Mercati on a 250-plus hectare property in the hills dividing the regions of Tuscany and Romagna, where he began growing and transforming medicinal plants – the activities that still represent the company’s core business. Aboca is still fully owned by the founder’s family and still solidly anchored to the values that have always inspired its work: to achieve innovation in health and healthcare through natural products that respect both human physiology and the environment from which they spring. The Aboca is unique in the world thanks to vertical integration of the highest levels of specialization in all the areas making up the company organization: from organic production of medicinal plants (on about 1000 hectares of cultivated land) to management of all the phases of processing and transformation that result in its finished products, and to selective management of distribution. From this point of view, Aboca has always invested sizeable resources in training and education for its clients (pharmacies, parapharmacies, herbalists) and in ancillary services, and has developed an international network of pharmacies managed as franchising in-store corners (Apoteca Natura) specialized in self-medication and natural products. Today, the company is active on the market with three major brand names (Aboca, Planta Medica, and Apoteca Natura). Its growth strategies are based on strengthening the vertical integration model through internationalization and constant innovation in all its areas of business.
