Michael Winter

Biography

Since October 2011, Michael Winter has been Head of the Sub-Department “Safety of the Food Chain” in the Department for Food Safety and Animal Health of the German Federal Ministry for Food and Agriculture. He brings extensive experience to his role as Member of EFSA’s Management Board, having worked since 2001 in the areas of food safety, food controls, crisis management and food security. Dr. Winter also acts in a supervisory capacity for both the national risk assessment institute (Federal Institute for Risk Assessment (BfR) and the national risk management authority (Federal Office of Consumer Protection and Food Safety (BVL). In this respect, he has a very well developed understanding of the key issues at the interface between risk assessment and risk management. Dr. Winter received his PhD in food chemistry at the University of Hannover in 1986, after having graduated in the same subject in 1980 from the University of Würzburg.
