Biography

Professor Raymond O’Rourke is a barrister and a specialist food regulatory and consumer affairs lawyer. He is visiting professor at the Faculty of Life & Health Sciences in the School of Biomedical Sciences at the University of Ulster, in Northern Ireland. He has wide experience in EU issues, having worked in Brussels for the European Parliament, the European Consumers Association (BEUC) and a Brussels-based law firm. He is chair of the Consumers’ Association of  Ireland (CAI), and the member of the Management Board of the Food Safety Authority of Ireland. Professor O’Rourke  represents one of four EFSA Board members required to have a background in the food chain or consumer affairs. In Ireland, he has advised the Irish Food Board (Bord Bia) and private companies on issues ranging from country of origin labelling to local branding, and abroad has taken part in EU accession projects, advising on EU food law in eastern Europe and the Balkans. He is the author of  two  books on food law, European Food Law (2005)  – which is recognised as a leading authority on all aspects of European food law -- and Food Safety and Product Liability (2000).
