Biography
He joined Eni in 1988 as a Reservoir Engineer. He spent the first years of his professional life working in oil fields in Italy before moving to West Africa, where he was appointed Chief Development Engineer. He returned to Headquarters in 1997 as coordinator of Business Development activities for Africa and the Middle East, contributing to a number of new initiatives and portfolio activities. In 2000, he became Technical Services Manager and in 2001 moved to the Middle East as Project Director on a giant gas production project. From 2004 to 2005, he held a number of managerial positions in Eni’s Exploration & Production Division, eventually becoming the Chief Executive Officer of Eni Mediterranea Idrocarburi S.p.A., where he was involved in oil and gas exploration and production in Sicily. At the end of 2005, he was appointed Managing Director of Eni’s subsidiaries in Libya, where he remained for two years and concluded the renegotiation of oil contracts and launched an important programme of social projects. In October 2007, he became head of operational and business activities for sub-Saharan Africa as Senior Vice President. In December 2011, he was appointed Executive Vice President of Eni’s Exploration & Production Division and his responsibilities were extended to include the entire African continent and the Middle East region, also coordinating the Mozambique programme for the development of the Mamba and Coral discoveries. From 2014 to May 2016, he was a member of the Board of Directors of the Eni Foundation. He has been Chairman of Versalis S.p.A. since January 2017. He has been Chairman of the Italian Petroleum and Mining Association since May 2016. He graduated in mining engineering from the University of Cagliari.
