Biography
Glauco Tocchini-Valentini, one of the founding members of SIBBM, for his merits in the genetics sector, was elected a few days ago as a member of the US National Academy of Sciences. As is well known, it is one of the most respected honors of scientists all over the world; But of course the National Academy is largely constituted by those operating in the United States. In 2009, only 18 new members were elected from outside the United States (eg Neo-Nobel Harald zur Hausen). Only very few scientists working in Italy in the organic field are part of the National Academy: among them Rita Levi-Montalcini, Luca Cavalli-Sforza, Tullio Pozzan and now Glauco Tocchini-Valentini. Glauco has devoted much of his scientific activity to understanding the regulation of transcription, nucleic acid metabolism and especially the role of topoisomerase II enzymes and endonucleases in tRNA splicing. For years it has been one of the most effective promoters of the systematic use of mouse mutants to understand human diseases; In pursuit of this purpose, he has contributed decisively to the realization, at Campus Adriano Buzzati-Traverso, Monterotondo (Rome), EMBL Outstation and the European Mouse Mutant Archive (EMMA). Glauco has been an open supporter of the need to develop rigorous methodologies to obtain reliability, solidity and reproducibility in the phenotyping of clinical manifestations and the behavior of mutant mice,
