Biography
He was educated as Physical Oceanographer (1975-80, Christian Albrechts University Kiel, Germany) with focus on theoretical subjects. Then he applied geophysical fluid dynamics to Lake Geneva (Switzerland). During his PhD (Ecole Polytechnique Fédéral de Lausanne) he had worked with civil engineers, later he worked with ecosystem modellers (University of Hamburg) and operational forecaster (German Federal Maritime Agency). In 1991 he moved into science management ("Marine Science and Technology Programme" of the European Commission) at DG RTD (Brussels). There he worked since; initially supervising R&I-projects including their cooperation with marine data centres, later managing funds and contracts, delegation of programme implementation to Executive Agencies as well as dissemination of results. Currently he is Advisor to a Deputy Directorate General in DG Research and Innovation (European Commission). Nowadays, his research interests focus on the interfaces between geosciences, humanities and society. He participates at social media to promote geoscience insights. Among his concerns are resourceful societies, the intersections of ‘culture’ and ‘nature’, and anthropogenic global change.
