Biography

Practiced orthopaedic spine surgery for 25 years at Scripps Memorial Hospital in Encinitas California as part of CORE Orthopaedic Medical Group, During his years of practice he was a consultant to a number of public and private companies working on the development and clinical evaluation of innovative spinal technologies such as disc replacement (Pro-Dicsc), vertebroplasty (Cortoss,), Bone Growth Stimulation ( Orthologic), Bone Graft Substitutes (Orthovita), etc. Prior to retiring from active clinical practice in 2004 I formed PJ Surgical Inc.through which he expanded his consulting activities. Currently he is the Medical Director of Orthofix Inc, primarily working of the development and clinical evaluation of allograft with viable adult mesenchymal stem cells. he is also the Medical Director for Benvenue Medical (kyphoplasty technology), Spinal Kinetics Inc. ( disc replacement), and Axiomed Inc. (disc replacement). He serve on the DSMB for Zimmer, Mesoblast and Orthofix. Specialties: Developing and trouble shooting clinical research protocols (IDEs, CE Mark post-market, etc.). Evaluating adverse events through DSMB committees. Meeting with the FDA,CMS, IRBs, insurance companies etc. in support of clinical protocols. Public speaking regarding primarily stem cell technology at a variety of venues from national/international meetings to local medical societies and surgeon groups.
