Research Interest
Microbial symbiosis plays an essential role in the health and physiology of different marine organisms. However, environmental stress factors such as climate change increasingly threaten the physiological function of the olobionte (the whole of the participants in the symbiosis, forming an ecological unit). My research investigates the biogeochemistry of host-microbial interactions, as well as the physiological and ecological consequences of these dynamics. I am mainly interested in carbon and nitrogen cycles, and to date my studies have focused on two different model systems: the photosynthetic corrosion symbiosis and the chemo-synthetic symbiosis of lucid bivalve. The main objective of my work is to provide a mechanistic understanding of how mutualism can improve the physiological performance of the host and contribute to the functioning of the ecosystem.
