Research Interest
Dr. Menditto's research activity has as its main guideline the design and implementation of observational studies for the evaluation of the use of drugs under 'real-world' conditions through the use of health databases, medical networks of general medicine and the network of private pharmacies. Since 2005, he has started studying new research strategies aimed at providing the tools to implement at the territorial level the appropriateness of prescribing and using drugs. During his PhD, he has been involved in the design, development and coordination of data collection on pharmaceutical requirements from different territorial levels. This is to achieve analytical and processing tools aimed at quantitative verification of the drugs used, with particular regard to cost-effectiveness. This activity has led to the creation of a regional database of pharmaceutical prescriptions, In particular, due to the specific skills acquired, research has focused on conducting drug-use studies from medical and clinical health databases. By means of record linkage techniques it is possible to bind to a pharmaceutical prescription made on a particular patient, information about mortality and cause-specific hospitalization, outpatient outpatient services, exemptions for pathology or disability. In this way it is possible to identify, at the patient level, the dynamics of drug use and develop a set of indicators that, while improving the quality of care, can also rationalize the costs of therapy. THE' analysis of such information may be of extreme interest to policy makers who have to implement and evaluate public health programs. In addition, the knowledge of prescriptive dynamics in terms of quality (appropriateness of use) as well as quantitative (volume of use) is the necessary condition for framing the drug policy in a rational context, also from the point of view of the evaluation of the effects of interventions that the market, the norms or the culture of the drug develop over time. Starting from 2012, thanks to the participation in the international network of the European Innovation Partnership on Active and Healthy Aging (EIP-AHA), Dr. Menditto's research interests focused particularly on the study of adherence and persistence to drug therapies and existing relationships with clinical and economic outcome. Membership in an international consortium, starting from 2015, has further expanded the research interest in studying existing relationships between polyetherapy, therapeutic adherence and multimarbidity.
