Biography
Dr. Bruno Pagano graduated in Chemistry at the University of Naples "Federico II" (Italy) in 2003, with a experimental thesis in Physical Chemistry titled "Thermodynamics and kinetics of PNA-DNA quadruplex-forming chimeras". In 2004, he received a postgraduate fellowship from the University of Salerno for research abroad, conducted at the MRC National Institute for Medical Research (London, UK). In March 2008, he received his PhD in Pharmaceutical Sciences from the University of Salerno (Italy), with a dissertation on "Physico-chemical characterization of DNA G-quadruplexes and their interaction with proteins and potential anticancer agents". During the PhD period he was visiting a student at the Randall Division of King's College London (UK) under the supervision of Prof. F. Fraternali (2006 and 2007) and at the School of Pharmacy, University of London (UK) under the supervision of Prof. S. Neidle (2007). From 2008 to 2011, he has been Postdoctoral Fellow at the Faculty of Pharmacy at the University of Salerno (Italy). In 2008, he won a FEBS Fellowship and was a visiting scientist at Randall Division of Cell and Molecular Biophysics, King's College London (UK). From December 2011 he is Assistant Professor at the Dept. of Pharmacy, University of Naples "Federico II" (Italy). In 2013, he obtained the Italian Professorship Qualification as Associate Professor in three sectors: Medicinal Chemistry, Organic Chemistry and Physical Chemistry. he won a FEBS Fellowship and was a visiting scientist at Randall Division of Cell and Molecular Biophysics, King's College London (UK). During these years, Dr. Pagano has been honored with three awards: - "G. Randazzo" award from the Italian Chemical Society (Campania) for the best PhD thesis of 2008 in the field of Chemical Sciences; - "A. Lucci" award from the Italian Association of Calorimetry and Thermal Analysis (AICAT) for the contribution to the thermodynamic and calorimetric studies on the stability and interactions of nucleic acids with molecules of pharmacological interest; - "G. De Santis" award 2011 from the Division of "Chemistry of Biological Systems" of Italian Chemical Society and Italfarmaco SpA. In 2011 he won an AIRC (Italian Association for Cancer Research) three-year grant for funding the research project "Telomere-targeting anticancer drugs". In 2013 he won a three-year grant from the Ministry of Education, University and Research (MIUR) in Future in Research (FIR). In 2015 he won the "STAR Program" 2014 of the University of Naples "Federico II" for funding the research project entitled "Targeting i-motifs throughout the human genome".
