Research Interest

The doctorate has done full-time research at the Department of Natural Resources Chemistry, at the Department of Pharmacy at the University of Naples "Federico II". The first part of the scientific activity is the natural continuation of a research line carried out by the group of prof. Maria Valeria D'Auria, where she joined in 2002 with the beginning of PhD research. The research activity is focused on topics of Organic Chemistry. In particular it can be divided into two main themes: isolation of secondary metabolites from porphyrins - stereochemical and synthetic studios. In the first phase, Dr. Sepe has devoted himself to the study of pharmacologically active secondary metabolites isolated from marine organisms such as echinoderms and porphyria. Numerous marine invertebrate species of different geographic origin have been analyzed and isolated dozens of compounds isolated, many of them with unprecedented structural architectures in literature and promising pharmacological properties. At the same time, he focused on synthetic issues aimed at resolving stereochemical issues. The research carried out at this stage allowed the resolution of specific issues, but it was also the right gym for the research activity of the last period. The skills gained in the field of organic synthesis have created a new line of research, with remarkable resonance on the international scene. The biochemistry study of marine organisms was dealt with in a profoundly different perspective from the initial stage. It has shifted from " high-throughput screening " of marine organisms to " target-oriented discovery " focused on identifying marine natural products as nuclear receptor ligands. Isolation, biochemical characterization, derivative design accompanied by total synthesis work as well as in vitro and in vivo pharmacological testing has led to the identification of a wide range of modulators such as potential lead for ulcerative colitis and cholestasis therapy. Currently Dr. Sepe's research is about the synthesis of new lead compounds, promising for therapy of pathologies such as metabolic syndrome, diabetes, NASH, PBC.
