Roberto Sulpizio

Associate Professor
Department of Earth and Geo- Environmental Sciences
University of Aldo Moro
Italy

Biography

Dr. Roberto Sulpizio graduated in Geological Sciences at the University of Pisa on 24 February 1994, discussing a thesis on physical vulcanology on the eruption of Avellino del Somma-Vesuvius. The postgraduate research activity started with a three-year CNR scholarship for the geological survey of Somma-Vesuvius, which produced the publication of the new volcano map at scale 1: 15,000 (SELCA publisher, Florence, 2003). He subsequently obtained a semiannual scholarship for the CNR abroad, at the Laboratoires des Sciences du Climat et de l'Environment (LSCE), Gif sur Yvette, France. From 1998 to 2005 he has been researching at the Department of Earth Sciences in Pisa, the Institute of Geosciences and Georisorse-CNR in Pisa, the Vesuvian Observatory and the Geomineralogical Department of Bari. Since 2005 he has been a researcher at the Geomineralogical Department from Bari. Main professional interests are physical vulcanology, distal tefra study, large-scale laboratory experiments on explosive volcanic processes, mitigation of volcanic hazards, volcanic interaction with the surrounding environment, geological mapping. He was the director of the Southern Sector Survey of the Volcano Somma -Vesuvio. These studies have led to the publication of more than 50 papers in specialized journals, of which over 40 in international impact factor magazines. In 2008 he was guest editor of a special volume of the Journal of Volcanology and Geothermal Research devoted to explosive volcanism and ash scattering in the Central Mediterranean. He was Professor of Geochemistry and Vulcanology and Physics of Vulcanism from 2000 to 2006 at the University of Calabria. He has been invited to Vulcanology at Paris Sud XI University in Orsay, France, in 2005 and 2008. Since 2006 he has been teaching Vulcanic Detection at the University of Bari's Degree in Geological Sciences. Since 2006 he has been a member of the Board of Directors of the Italian Association of Vulcanology-ONLUS, with the role of adviser.
