Research Interest
Structural and functional properties of respiratory proteins of invertebrates and vertebrates, including humans. In particular, this comparative study has highlighted the development of sophisticated modulation mechanisms for the release of oxygen at peripheral tissue levels in relation to different living and habitat requirements. - Study of natural human hemoglobin variants and the structure-function relationship closely related to the identification of the onset of possible pathologies due to particular mutations. - Characterization of the Mioglobin Hydrophobic Holes, using the NMR spectroscopy of 129 Xe in order to obtain information on the accessibility of the internal cavities of the protein and on the dynamics of the protein-ligand interaction. - Analysis of biological fluids by HPLC and mass spectrometry for the identification of hereditary defects, responsible for the metabolism of purines and pyrimidines, and for the identification of biomarkers for fibromyalgia - Study of inhibitory activity of plant extracts and synthesis compounds against different target enzymes involved in neurodegenerative diseases, hyperpigmentation of the skin, hyperuricaemia and gout. The results of the various researches have been published in international journals, as well as communications at national and international conferences. He is also enrolled at the Italian Society of Biochemistry
