Biography
Degree in Physics Magna cum Laude at the University of Florence in 1985. In 1989 he received the title of "PhD in Physics" from the Italian Minister of Education. Teacher of Mathematics and Physics at the High School from 1988 to 1990. Researcher (Permanent Position) at the Science Faculty at the Physics Department of the University of Florence from 1990 to 2002. Associate Professor of Physics of Matter at the Faculty of Science of the University of Florence starting from November 1, 2002, after winning a public competition in Trento in 2001. From 1 November 2002 until the end of January 2013 he was appointed as "Coordinator of PhD in Physics" (Coordinator of PhD Program in Physics of the University of Florence). From 1 January 2007 until 31 December 2012 he is also Director of the PhD School in the Sciences of the University of Florence, which organizes 10 different PhD programs in different sciences, ranging from Mathematics to Geology and Biology. From the beginning of February 2013 until February 2015 he has been a member of the Internal Evaluation Committee of the University of Florence. From the beginning of February 2015 he is Chairman of the Internal Evaluation Committee of the University of Florence. Member of the committees in public competitions for the selection of new researchers at the University. Responsible of Research Projects of INFM (National Institute of Physics of the Subject), and coordinator of the activity of the Florence Unit of Research of Section D (Magnetism and Metals) of INFM. In 1998, 2000, 2001, 2002, 2005 and 2008 he participated in Projects funded in previous FIRB and PRIN programs. Responsible of the local unit of research in PRIN 2005. Member of organizing committees and Advisory Boards of international conferences; invited speakers at national and international conferences and workshops. Chairman of the International Conference "Theoretical Trends in Low Dimensional Magnetism - LDM 2003", Florence, July 2003 Co-Chairman of the 30th MECO Conference (Cortona, April 2005). Referee for Physical Review Letters, Physical Review B and E, Journal of Physics, New Journal of Physics, Nature Physics, Europhysics Letters, European Physical Journal B.
Research Interest
His scientific activity is mainly in the field of solid state physics, and it has been especially devoted to some aspects of the equilibrium statistical mechanics of solids and low-dimensional magnetic systems. Up to the early 2000's, the core of his research activity was the investigation of quantum effects in noble-gas solids, magnetic systems and Josephson junctions arrays by the original method of the effective Hamiltonian (or Pure Quantum Self Consistent Harmonic Approximation) developed within the framework of the Path Integral Formulation of Statistical Mechanics. He also worked in the field of Monte Carlo simulation of both classical and quantum systems, phase transitions in magnetic models,
