Associate Professor
Department of Agrarian, Food and Forestry Management
University of Firenze

Biography
Gherardo Chirici was born in Florence on June 3, 1971 , honored in 1998 in Forestry Sciences at the Faculty of Agriculture of the University of Florence with a thesis titled "Information System for the Enhancement of Forestry Knowledge in the Planning of the Territory" (Rapporteur Prof. Giovanni Bernetti, co-rapporteur Prof. Roberto Scotti). As a student, he begins several professional and scientific collaborations with the use of Geographic Information Systems and Remote Sensing Techniques, in particular with the Studio RDM in Florence (for example: hyperspectral remote sensing for defining the areas of the Sorgenti of Peschiera; hyperspectral measures for defining the level of decompression of the Cansiglio forests, TRANSITALIA project for the remote sensing of damages on the forests of Apennines and Isles) and with the IATF (Institute of Forestry Settlement and Technology) of the University of Florence, under the guidance of Prof. Piermaria Corona, at the Associated Times of Forest Inventories (for example:the development of the Territorial Information System in the context of the project "Study of environmental and productive qualification through reforestation in a public farm in the periurban area of Rome", use of GIS modeling in the Multiregional Operational Program 1994-1999, MARBOLEG project) . Between 1998 and 1999 he is a research fellow at the CNR IATA (Institute for Agrometeorology and Telerilevamento applied to Agriculture) in Florence with a scholarship granted by CeSIA (Center for the Applications of Informatics in Agriculture ) - Georgofili Academy. It carries out its research activity aimed at improving the processing of remote data processing under the guidance of Dr. Fabio Maselli in the framework of the European RESMEDES projects " Remote sensing of Mediterranean desertification and environmental stability " (ENV4-CT95-0094) and RESYSMED " Synthesis of change detection parameters in a land-surface change indicator for long term desertification studies in the Mediterranean area " (ENV4-CT97-0683). At the end of 1999 she started the Ph.D. in "Forestry Settlement" at the University of Tuscia (Viterbo), which is held at the IATF of the University of Florence and in collaboration with the Italian Academy of Forestry under the guidance of the Proff. Orazio Ciancio, Piermaria Corona and Marco Marchetti within the European project MNTFR " Scale Dependent Monitoring of Non-Timber Forest Resources Based on Indicators Assessed in Various Scales" (FAIR CT98 4045). He completes the PhD in 2002 with a thesis titled "Developing a Detection Protocol with Spatial Indicators for Forestry Planning".
