Biography
Born in Florence in 1949. Degree in Physics at the University of Florence "summa cum laude" in 1973. The thesis was prepared during a year long stage at the MPI of Heidelberg. Associate Professor at the University of Florence since 1982. Full Professor from 2000.
Research Interest
In all my research activity I contributed by developing original detection techniques. These techniques often came to be essential for the success of the initiatives themselves. Particular contributions to these developments are as follows: 1. one of the first applications of CsI (Tl) scintillators plus potodiodes to heavy ion detection, with special attention paid to the doping homogeneity 2. Contribution to the design study of the "Miniball" array of Michigan State University 3. Proposition of an original telescope constituted by a single sensitive element: it permits to discriminate between different composite ionization-scintillation signals extracted by a silicon chip diode acting both as a semiconductor detector and as a photodiode 4. construction of multi-element Si-CsI (Tl) telescopes for Au + Au collisions at 150-400 AMeV 5. studies on the Pulse Height Defect Observed in silicon detectors When hit by highly ionizing heavy ions 6. Study of Channeling effects in Silicon detectors, with reference to both the physics of the channeling and its effects on the uncertainty of the energy measurements . 8. Design and construction of the original three-element phoswich detectors, fundamental for the FIASCO setup 9. design and construction of a fast and high resolution digitizer (100 MSample / s, 12 bits, 10.8 effective) for amplitude, shape and timing information 10. Development of digital processing techniques to extract amplitude, shape and timing information from nuclear detectors sampled by fast and high resolution digitalizers
