Biography

1995 - Degree in Physics with praise at the University of Florence 1999 - PhD in Physics with praise at the Scuola Normale Superiore di Pisa 1999-2004 - Research Associate and Researcher at the LENS Laboratory of the University of Florence and CNR since 2005 - Associate Professor of Physics at Matter at the University of Florence from 2015 - President of CdS in Physics and Astrophysics and in Physics and Astrophysics Sciences at the University of Florence Giovanni Modugno conducts experimental research at LENS and the Department of Physics and Astronomy at the University of Florence, directed to the study of fundamental phenomena on ultra-cool quantum gases. Among the most important results obtained we can mention: - Bose-Einstein condensation of potassium atoms [Science 294, 1320 (2001)] - the creation of a strongly interacting Bose-Fermi quantum blend [Science, 297, 2240 (2002); Phys. Rev. Lett. 89, 150403 (2002)) - the creation of a condensate of Bose-Einstein with tunable interaction [Phys. Rev. Lett. 99, 010403 (2007)] - the application of Bose and Fermi gas weakly interfering with high precision interferometric measurements [Phys. Rev. Lett. 92, 230402 (2004); Phys. Rev. Lett. 100, 080405 (2008)] - the observation of Anderson's location for atoms in a messy medium, and the measure of elusive mobility edge in 3D [Nature 453, 896 (2008); Nature Phys. 11, 554 (2015)] - Study of superfluous and insulating phases in a messy Bose gas [Nature Phys. 6, 354 (2010); Phys. Rev. Lett. 113, 095301 (2014)] - observation of the spectrum of states bound to three bodies of Efimov type [Nature Phys. 5, 586 (2009); Phys. Rev. Lett. 111, 053202 (2013)]

Research Interest

His most recent research activity is directed to the quantum simulation of quantum phenomena in many bodies, using various types of quantum gases with short and long range interactions, where most of the physical parameters can be controlled. The long-term goal is to study exotic phases of matter and potential new materials with engineered quantum properties.
