Biography
1989: Degree in Physics with the thesis "The L3 experiment at LEP: calibration of muon filter and first data analysis". Maximum grade (110/110 cum laude) 1993: PhD in Physics with the thesis "Measurement of the tau polarization with the L3 detector at LEP". 1997: I became a researcher at the Physics Department of the Florence University, and I took the responsibility of the laboratory for the development of analog and digital electronics for cosmic rays detectors; in particular, I started a R & D activity to realize detection systems based on silicon microstrip detectors. I became responsible for the development and construction of the tracking system for the PAMELA apparatus, which was launched in 2006 on a Russian satellite for the study of antiparticles in cosmic rays. The device is still taking data, and many analyzes are now under way to extract as many physical information as possible from the data. Particularly interesting are the antiproton / proton ratios (in publication on PRL) and the positron / electron ratios (in publication on Nature), which shows (at high energy, above 20 GeV) a significant excess over what we can expect from purely secondary production, clear indication of unexpected phenomena (possible contribution from dark matter annihilation? possible unexpected astrophysical phenomena?) In 2004 I proposed, in collaboration with some Japanese groups, the LHCf experiment, to measure the neutral pion and photon momentum spectra in the very forward region at LHC. This measurement is essential for studying the atmospheric showers produced by high energy cosmic rays. LHCF has been approved by LHCC and has taken data in 7 TeV pp and p-Pb collisions in 2010 and 2013. The project has been approved by INFN and, starting from 2005, I am responsible for the Italian side of the collaboration and Deputy Spokeperson of the experiment. In September 2003 I became Associate Professor at the Physics Department of Florence University; I started this job in February 2005. In July 2010 I became Full Professor and I officially started this job at the Florence University in December 2012. I am Vice Director of the Physics and Astronomy Department of the Florence University. On September 2012 I was awarded the title 'Commendatore alla meritata della Repubblica Italiana' by the Italian President Giorgio Napolitano, for being Deputy Speaker of the LHCf collaboration.
