Research Interest

a) Sleep in the Lifecycle In this context, particular attention has been paid to the physiological and behavioral characteristics of sleep-wake rhythm. In particular, in preterm infants born and matured, motility, cerebral activity and yawning were investigated. In the elderly subject, motility was investigated in relation to sleep states, the organization of ocular movements during REM sleep and daytime sleepiness in relation to the distribution of yawns. These aspects were investigated through polygraphic recordings of sleep-wake rhythm and behavioral observation. b) Awakening This research topic has been explored through the analysis of behavioral characteristics (motility, tears) that accompany awakening and age-related changes in premature and late-born babies observed for extended periods (24 hours). c) Mental representations of sleep In this research area we have addressed the ideas of mothers of preterm and preterm infants about the characteristics of the child's sleep, the strategies of care associated with it (eg sleeping techniques) and awakening (signals through where the parent catches the baby's awakening and why it wakes up). d) Sleep-related behaviors In this research, particular attention was given to the link between yawn and drowsiness and between yawning and sleep-wakefulness and sleep-wake transitions. These aspects, already explored in the child and the elderly, have been studied in particular populations such as cronotypes, subjects with Parkinson's disease and sleepless subjects.
