Biography
Professor Paolo Rovero, born in Florence in 1958, graduated in organic chemistry in 1983 (University of Florence) and specialized in Peptide Chemistry in 1985 (University of Sherbrooke, Canada). His research activity has been around for over 25 years in the field of design, synthesis, conformational analysis and biological characterization of peptides of pharmaceutical and biotechnological interest in different academic and industrial environments. Prof. Rovero is co-author of over 180 scientific publications in international journals and over 20 international pharmaceutical patents. He is a member of the Italian Chemical Society, the European Peptide Society and the American Peptide Society (founding member). The main stages of his career are as follows: April 1985 - March 1986: attends the laboratory of Prof. D. Regoli, Department of Pharmacology, Faculty of Medicine, University of Sherbrooke, Canada. Specialization in peptide synthesis. April 1986 - May 1991: Researcher at the Peptide Chemistry Laboratory at the Research Laboratory at A. Menarini Pharmaceutical Company in Florence. Research activities in the field of the development of peptide neurotransmitters agonists and antagonists. June 1991 - October 1998: researcher at the Institute of Mutagenesis and Differentiation of the CNR of Pisa. Research activities in the field of peptides of immunological interest. November 1998 - October 2003: Associate Professor of Pharmaceutical Chemistry at the Faculty of Pharmacy of the University of Salerno. Since November 2003: transfer to the University of Florence (CdL in Pharmaceutical Biotechnology, Faculty of Pharmacy), where he is, with a group of colleagues, the Interdisciplinary Laboratory of Peptide and Protein Chemistry and Biology (PeptLab; www.unifi.it / PeptLab). Strongly engaged in the field of technology transfer, since 2003 he has been involved in the creation of the first spin-off company of the Florence University: EspiKem Srl (www.espikem.com), and in 2007 the establishment of the research firm Toscana Biomarkers Srl (www.toscanabiomarkers.com), capitalized by regional institutional funds and incubated by the TLS Foundation in Siena.
