In 1973 he did his military service as an officier in the Italian Air Force and, during this period, he worked also at the University of Parma in the field of biochemistry. He was a research assistant of Organic Chemistry at the University of Rome "La Sapienza" from 1974 to 1982. In the same university he became lecturer of Organic Chemistry in 1979, associate professor in 1982 and full professor in 2001.
