Biography

The professor. Luca Parente was born in Naples on July 25, 1948, graduated in Medicine and Surgery at the University of Naples in 1972 (110/110). From 1973 to 1982 he worked at the Department of Experimental Pharmacology at the University of Naples as a four-year contractor, ordinary assistant, professor in charge. In 1982 he was appointed Associate Professor of Toxicology at the Faculty of Pharmacy in Naples. In 1975 he graduated from the Department of Semiotics and Diagnostics of Laboratory at the Faculty of Medicine and Surgery of Naples. In 1978 he was a NATO Research Fellow at Dep. of Experimental Pathology, St. Bartholomew's Hospital Medical School, London, England (Professor Derek A. Willoughby). From 1979 to 1986 he was Visiting Scientist at Dep. of Prostagland Research, Wellcome Research Laboratories, Beckenham, England (Professor Sir John R. Vane, Nobel Laureate, 1982, FRS). From 1987 to 1994 he directed the Laboratory of Pharmacology of the Sclavo Research Center, Siena. 1991, 1992, 1996, 2000 was Visiting Scientist at the Department of Biochemical Pharmacology, The William Harvey Research Institute, St. Bartholomew's Hospital Medical School, London, England (Professor RJ Flower, FRS). In 1994 he was appointed professor of pharmacology and pharmacology at the Faculty of Pharmacy of the University of Palermo. In 1999 he was appointed to the Chair of Pharmacology and Pharmacotherapy at the Degree Course in Chemistry and Pharmaceutical Technology at the Faculty of Pharmacy of the University of Salerno. From the academic year 2000-01 to 2002-203 he is president of the Degree Course in Herbal Techniques at the Faculty. From 2002 to 2006 she is coordinator of the PhD in 'Biochemistry and Pharmacology of Drug Action' at the Department of Pharmaceutical Sciences of the University of Salerno. Since the academic year 2006-07 he is a member of the Scientific Technical Committee for the establishment of the new Faculty of Medicine and Surgery at the University of Salerno. In 2002-04 and 2006-08 he was the national coordinator of COFIN-PRIN ministerial projects. Since 2006 he is the Chairman of the Salerno Natural Health Company Ethics Committee. He is a referee for numerous international scientific journals of pharmacological disciplines. He acts as a 'grant reviewer' for many national and international institutions, and since 2004 he is a member of the EULAR working group for the definition of therapeutic lines in rheumatology. He is author of more than 120 publications in international journals with 'referee', various chapters in internationally-used books and over a hundred communications to national and international conferences. He is also the author of three patents. His research activity mainly concerns the mechanism of action of anti-inflammatory drugs (aspirin, cortisone) and the mechanisms of regulation of apoptosis, a programmed cell death that is the basis of various neoplastic and neurodegenerative pathologies.
