Biography
prof. Ordinary of Organic Chemistry at the Department of Pharmacy. In 1972 he graduated in Chemistry at the Faculty of Science MMFFNN, University of Naples Federico II, with an experimental thesis on the chemistry of natural organic substances (rapporteur Prof. Luigi Minale). In 1976 he obtained the qualification for the chemistry professor, who was registered in 1976 at the Chamber of Chemical Engineers of Campania. The scientific career develops through different experiences at university and research institutions in Italy and abroad. From 1973 to 1987 he was a CNR Researcher at the Institute for Molecules of Molecular Biology (now Institute of Biomolecular Chemistry), Arco Felice (NA). In this time span spends some periods of study and research in the USA, deepening its training in the field of bio-organic chemistry and natural organic substances and cultivating, in particular, aspects related to the chemical and pharmacological study of biologically active molecules and to the application of spectroscopic techniques of structural investigation. From 1976 to 1977 he is a Junior Researcher at the Dept. of Chemistry, University of Hawaii at Manoa, Honolulu, HI, where he collaborates with the research group of prof. Paul J. Scheuer, recognized as the pioneer of marine metabolite chemistry. It is here that his interest in this subject will be strengthened, which in time will characterize a large part of his scientific production. In 1981 he was Visiting Scientist first at the group of prof. Jon Clardy, Dept of Chemistry, Cornell Univ., Ithaca, NY, then at the Prof. Koji Nakanishi, Dept. of Chemistry, Columbia Univ., New York, NY. In 1987 he became prof. Associate of Organic Chemistry at the Faculty of Pharmacy, University of Naples Federico II. In 1990 he was Visiting Scientist at the Scripps Institution of Oceanography, Univ. Of California San Diego, with the research group of prof. William Fenical; in 1993 he was again at the Dept of Chemistry, University of Hawaii at Manoa with prof. Paul J. Scheuer, with whom he maintains a constant relationship even in later years. Since 1994, he has been an Ordinary of Organic Chemistry at the Faculty of Pharmacy of the University of Salerno. He has been appointed as Director of the Department of Pharmaceutical Sciences (1998-2000); Ph.D. Coordinator in Pharmaceutical Sciences (1998-2002); Head of Pharmacy Faculty (2000-2004 and 2008-2013); President of the Patent Commission of the University of Salerno (2004-2009); Elective Member of the Academic Senate of the University of Salerno (2006-2008); Member of the Scientific Council of the University of Salerno Foundation (since 2005). He is a member of the Italian Chemical Society, the American Chemical Society and honorary member of the Israel Chemical Society. In the Italian Chemical Society he has held numerous coordination tasks: in the 1994-1999 secretary / treasurer of the Campania section; From 2002 to 2010 he was treasurer, vice president and finally president of the Organic Chemistry Division; from 2011 to 2013 he is National Vice President and was recently elected Chairman of the Board for the three-year period 2014-2016. He has organized the organization of numerous national and international scientific events. Coordinator of Scientific Groups and Projects, held plenary conferences and invitations at national and international conferences and at Universities and Research Centers in Italy and abroad. Author of over 220 scientific publications and over 150 communications to congresses. from 2011 to 2013 he is National Vice President and was recently elected Chairman of the Board for the three-year period 2014-2016.
