Biography
Maurizio Cotta , born in Turin on 30 November 1947, is Professor of Political Science at the University of Siena. He was director (1991-97) of the Department of Historical, Juridical, Political and Social Sciences of the same university. He has taught in the past at the University of Texas at Austin (1989-1990), at the European University Institute (1992-93), at the Central European University of Budapest (January-February 2010) and has held courses at the University of Montpellier, at 'IEP Lille, at Sciences Po in Paris, at the University of Turku, at the Fudan University of Shanghai and at the University of Nanjing. He was a visiting fellow at Yale University (1980-81) and at the Center for European Studies at Harvard University (2000). Director since 1997 of the Interdepartmental Research Center on Political Change (CIRCaP) of the University of Siena. He was and is currently the Director of the PhD "Political Science: Comparative and European Politics" (2000-05; 2010 ..) and of the "Politics in Europe" Master of the University of Siena (1999-2005). He was a member of the Executive Committee of the European Consortium for Political Research (1994-2000), of the Steering Committee of the Italian Journal of Political Science, of which he was co-director between 1992 and 1998. President of the Italian Society of Political Science (2001-04). He was coordinator of the European Summer Schools in Comparative Politics, funded by the TMR fund of the European Union. He was coordinator (2006-09) of the Integrated Project INTUNE funded by the 6th Framework Program of the European Union. He collaborates with the Bertelsmann Stiftung for the elaboration of the Transformation Index used to evaluate the governments of the developed countries.
