Biography

Pierangelo Isernia is Professor of Political Science at the University of Siena, where he teaches International Relations and Methodology of Political Science in the specialized degree courses and Introduction to Political Research in the Doctoral School in "Political Science - Comparative and European Politics." Director of the doctoral school in Political Science from 2006 to 2008 and since 2007 directs the Laboratory for Political and Social Analysis (LAPS) of the Interdepartmental Center for Research on Political Change (CIRCaP). He was coordinator, Maurizio Cotta, the Integrated Project INTUNE ( "Integrated and United - A Quest for Citizenship in an 'Ever Closer Europe') within the 6 ° Framework Program (2005-2009) and coordinated the Integrated Project Europolis ( "a Deliberative Polity-Making Project") financed by 7 ° program Framework and a network of European foundations (2008-2010). He is the head of the Siena Unit of the Transworld Project ( Transatlantic Relations and the future of Global Governance ) funded by the 7th Framework Program for the period 2012-2015. He was national coordinator of projects of national interest (PRIN) in 2001-2002 ("The national identity between localism and globalism: the Italian case in a comparative perspective"), in 2006-2007 ("Italians and French seen from the inside: National Identity, Multiculturalism and Immigration ") and from 2013 (" Italian Foreign Policy in a Comparative Perspective.) He was the scientific responsible for research units in 2004-2005 and 2008-2009 ("The Quality of Deliberation"). numerous PAR and a Large Equipment project in 2007 (from which the LAPS was born). He is a member of the board of scientific advisors of the Transatlantic Trend Survey since 2002 and of the Transatlantic Survey on Immigration since 2007 and is Principal Investigator of the Transatlantic Leadership Survey (formerly European Elite Survey from 2007 to 2009), all projects promoted by the German Marshall Fund of the US and from the Compagnia di San Paolo. He is a scientific advisor to TNS (Taylor Nelson and Sofres) International. He is a member of the Board of Directors of the Italian Political Science Society since 2010, of the Steering Committee of the Italian Journal of Political Science since 2007, and is a member of the Commission for National Scientific Qualification (ASN) for the two year period 2013-2014. His main research interests are in the relations between public opinion and foreign policy, anti-Americanism, transatlantic relations, national and European identity, deliberative democracy and opinion polling methodology. He has published monographs, curated books and contributions in numerous foreign Italian magazines. She is referee of several international journals, including Journal of Conflict Resolution , Political Psychology , Journal of Peace Research ,  European Journal of Political Research , Public Opinion Quarterly and European Union Politics. He is co-editor (with Maurizio Cotta) of the INTUNE volume series for Oxford University Press. He is currently working on a volume (with Philip Everts) on the determinants of public support for the use of force in international relations (for Routledge), a volume (with Maurizio Cotta) on the relations between elites and masses in processes of European integration (for Oxford) and is taking care (with James Fishkin) a special issue of the magazine European Union Politics on the results of the EuroPolis project.

Research Interest

His main research interests are in the relations between public opinion and foreign policy, anti-Americanism, transatlantic relations, national and European identity, deliberative democracy and opinion polling methodology.
