Research Interest
Areas of research - Biomaterials of bone substitutes: research focused on the study of in vitro and in vitro osteogenic potential of biomaterials - bone substitutes in regenerative bone surgery for pre-implantation. The main objectives of this activity are: - Establish functional protocols for testing biomaterials both in vitro and in vivo - Validate selected biomaterials with osteogenic substitutes in the rebuilding of the jaw - develop a protocol of histomorphometry to evaluate bone regeneration in biopsies in vivo - Analyze the gene expression of osteoblasts and osteoclasts obtained from biopsies in vivo These studies are conducted within the BoNetwork (Bone Physiopathology Group), of which Prof. Gherlone is a co-director. - Bone regeneration: study of innovative surgical techniques in order to reconstruct appropriate bone volcano volumes in patients with bone atrophies, for implantoprosthetic rehabilitation. This activity involves a close integration with the biological study of bone substitutes and at the same time application and comparison with autologous bone grafts taken from intra and extraoral sites. - Oral implantology: study and use of new implant systems, in vitro and in vivo studies of innovative implant surfaces to obtain early integration with hard and soft tissues. This research area was developed through a National Interest Research Project (PRIN 2005 prot. 2005063925_002), in which Prof. Gherlone's Unit performed a histological, histomorphometric and microtomographic evaluation of the osteointegration of implants with nanostructured scaffolds on an animal model. The study of dental implants with innovative coatings and scaffolds is continuing under a FIRB 2008 project. - Aesthetic prosthesis and implantoprosthetic rehabilitation in advanced osteointegration: in vitro and clinical studies with particular regard to the testing of last-generation materials, application of immediate loading protocols and post-traumatic dental implants. Editorial activity He is the Scientific Director of the Italian Oral Surgery magazine edited by Masson and Scientific Director of Doctor Os, edited by Aries 2, former Director of European Journal of Implant Prosthodontics. He is part of the Scientific Committee of Quintessenza Odontotecnica magazine and of the Quintessenza International Reading Committee.
