Il Prof. Montorsi è Editor-in-Chief (Direttore Responsabile) anche di European Urology Supplements, a prestigious scientific journal devoted to the study of the main Uro-andrological issues through the publication of monothematic volumes. He is a reviewer of the following scientific journals: JAMA, Lancet, Neuroimage, European Urology, Drugs, Journal of Urology, Journal of Andrology, Urology, International Journal of Impotence Research, Urology Internationalis, Urological Research, Acta Diabetologica, of Urology International, Journal of Sexual Medicine, Asian Journal of Andrology, Drugs and Aging. Surgical activity The rich operative case of Prof. Francesco Montorsi, attested by his publications on the various topics of urology and surgical andrology, has been acquired under the constant guidance of Prof. Patrizio Rigatti since 1987, in the field of the Department of Urology of the San Raffaele Hospital Institute. To refine his surgical knowledge, Prof. Francesco Montorsi participated in the departmental and operating room of four prestigious international urological departments. At the Department of Urology at the University of San Francisco (USA), under the guidance of Prof. T. Lue, he was able to deepen the surgical techniques of correcting the veno occlusive dysfunction of the cavernous body and correcting congenital penile incontinence acquired with the most modern variants of the albugine pruning techniques and the engraving of the albugine fibrotic plaque with wadding of saphenous vein patches. In this last chapter, Prof. Francesco Montorsi then developed a personalized multiple engraving technique of the albuginea tunic with the packaging of corresponding patches of sapphire vein. At the Department of Urology at the Boston University (USA) under the guidance of Prof. I. Goldstein, Prof. Francesco Montorsi participated in the first person with the rich surgical activity based mainly on microscopic revascularization of the cavernosal body and planting of three-component penile implants. In this last field, the operative case of Prof. Francesco Montorsi became the first in Italy for numerous cases treated. In addition, Prof. Francesco Montorsi developed an original technique for correcting erectile dysfunction in patients with severe plastic penile induration with contemporary penis enlargement by combining multiple transverse engraving of the albugine tunic and subsequent placement of three penile prostheses. At the Department of Urology at the University of Stanford (USA) under the guidance of Prof. R. Kessler, Prof. Francesco Montorsi further deepened the technique of positioning penile prostheses, performing complex cases using the different surgical access routes . At the Department of Urology and Transplantation at the University of Lyon (France) under the guidance of Prof. JM Dubernard, Prof. Francesco Montorsi has thoroughly studied the percutaneous kidney approach techniques for the treatment of complex renal calculus and malformations of the high excreting pathway and finally the neovascular intestinal packaging techniques in cystectomy for bladder neoplasia. At the Department of Urology at Johns Hopkins University in Baltimore, USA, and under the guidance of Prof Walsh before, and at the Urology Department of the University of Hamburg (Germany), Prof. H Huland, Professor Montorsi learned the technique of radical prostatectomy nerve sparing with subsequent excellent personal results. At the Urology Unit of the San Raffaele Hospital Institute, Prof. Francesco Montorsi has progressively acquired total surgical independence in all fields of urology and surgical andrology. In particular, he has gained significant experience also in completely unexplored fields such as urology laparoscopy that was applied after extensive experimental experiment on pigs, in pelvic lymphadenectomy interventions for staging prostate cancer, renal cyst resection, varicocelectomy, surrenectomy total or partial for both adrenal and neoplastic adrenal disease, nephrectomy and most recently radical prostatectomies. Also the field of minimally invasive surgical therapy of prostatic obstruction saw Prof. Francesco Montorsi protagonist firsthand, in particular in the application of permanent prostate stents and the most recent use of laser Holmio for endoscopic encephalopathy of prostate adenoma. Neoplastic prostate disease was another surgical field to which Prof. Francesco Montorsi devoted great attention, particularly in the development of radical prostatectomy nerve sparing techniques that led to the definition of integrated surgical-surgical protocols for maintaining the function postoperative erectile that are now followed throughout the world. More recently, at the Department of Urology at Henry Ford Hospital in Detroit, USA, and under the guidance of Prof. M. Merion, developed robotic surgical technique in Urology, with particular attention to robotic nerve-sparing radical prostatectomy for prostate cancer. Robotic surgical activity has led to the definition of surgical technique of radical nerve-sparing prostatectomy aimed at completely removing prostate cancer, while safeguarding the integrity of the anatomical structures responsible for urinary continence and penile erection. Robotic technique has also been successfully extended to cases of advanced tumor disease where, for example, extensive removal of prostate lymph nodes is required. Robotic technique is now successfully applied to the treatment of benign and malignant kidney tumors and the reconstruction of urinary tract malformations such as pyelo-ureteral joint disease. Awards Among the many prizes received by Prof. Montorsi during his career, the award was awarded in March 1998, the Crystal Matula Award, the most prestigious award of the European Association of Urology awarded to a young researcher under the age of 40 best international scientific production. The Crystal Matula Award was established in 1997 and is nowadays assigned to the annual congress of the European Association of Urology. All of the winners of this prestigious award cover top-level academic positions in the urological field. Urology Research Institute (URI) The Urological Research Institute (URI) is the most innovative Basic and Clinical Research Institute dedicated to the study of urological and andrological diseases. URI is part of the Department of Urology at the San Raffaele Health and Life University of Milan and is led by Prof. Francesco Montorsi. It is a structure of about 600 square meters, equipped with the most sophisticated and modern experimental equipment, in which more than 20 Italian and foreign researchers work. The URI research focuses on three very important male and female health fields: malignant urinary and reproductive malignant diseases : prostate, kidney, bladder, testicular and penile tumors; non-tumor diseases of urinary tract : urinary tract calculus, urinary incontinence, urinary tract infections, urethral pier joint stenosis, urethral stenosis; non-tumor illnesses of male and female reproductive system: benign prostatic hypertrophy, prostatitis, hyperactive bladder, male infertility, erectile dysfunction, female sexual dysfunctions. The main element of novelty in URIs is the close collaboration between basic researchers and clinical researchers that makes it possible to study medical problems that require a solution that can be used immediately to cure patients.
