Biography
Dr. Chen is the Director of the Institute of Chinese Materia Medica at the China Academy of Chinese Medical Sciences in Beijing. His work on the field of medicinal chemistry of natural products, associated with the determination of the active ingredient of traditional Chinese medicines and the identification of their mechanism of action, is well recognized. This includes but is not limited to the family of antimalarial drugs such as artemisinin. Likewise, Dr. Chen has pioneered the use of genomic approaches, such as NGS sequencing and DNA barcoding for identification of medicinal plant species.
Research Interest
Through his research, Dr. Chen hopes to deepen understanding of the mechanism by which herbal medicines disrupt diseases and identify relevant biomarkers, which could then point the way to new drug discovery.
