Biography

Prof. Shiina was born in Akita Pref., Tohoku District, Japan. He graduated from Iwate University in 1981 and started research work at National Food Research Institute (NFRI) in 1982. He obtained his Ph.D. in Agriculture in 2002 from University of Tsukuba. The title of his Ph.D. thesis is “Quality control of fruits and vegetables by controlling the heat and mass transfer”. He received two best publication awards as a coauthor from two Scientific Societies in 2011. He was also awarded a research prize of the Japan Association of Food Preservation Science in 2013 for “The use of mathematical model and simulation for management the postharvest quality of fresh produce”. He started to work as a professor at the Graduate School of Horticulture, Chiba University in April, 2014.

Research Interest

Research fields include Food Engineering, Postharvest Technology, and Life Cycle Assessment.
