Biography

Dr. Briner is a sports medicine physician specializing in the treatment of acute and overuse injuries in active patients. Board certified in Family Medicine with a Certificate of Added Qualification in Sports Medicine, Dr. Briner completed his medical school training at The Ohio State University; Family Medicine residency at MacNeal Hospital in Illinois; and Sports Medicine fellowship at Marshall University where he served as a team physician for the Thundering Herd.  Prior to joining HSS, Dr. Briner spent 23 years on the Family Medicine faculty of Lutheran General Hospital in Illinois, also serving as the Sports Medicine Fellowship Director – making him the longest serving Fellowship Director in the country. He is a charter member of the American Medical Society for Sports Medicine and a Fellow of the American College of Sports Medicine. Dr. Briner has served as a team physician for the New York Lizards, WNBA Chicago Sky, US National Soccer Teams, and several high school and college teams as well. He is currently the Head Team Physician for the US National Volleyball Teams, in addition to chairing the Sports Medicine and Performance Commission for USA Volleyball. For several years, he has been a member of the Medical Commission of the FIVB, Volleyball's international governing body, where he was selected as Beach Volleyball Medical Delegate to the London Olympics.   Dr. Briner is committed to teaming with patients to develop home rehabilitation regimens that will allow them to remain active. In appropriate patients, he hopes to help forestall and even prevent a need for surgery.  His clinical interest lies in helping arthritis patients manage their symptoms and continue exercising, as well as having an interest in the medical problems of athletes. Dr. Briner is the author of a book entitled, "Action Plan for Allergies," geared toward keeping allergic patients active.
