Research focuses on language and society (sociolinguistics), concepts of the mother tongue, globalization, multicultural society, identity, multilingualism, place and personal names, medical languages, literacy and development. Publication in progress includes: A Dictionary of Place-Names in Japan, Very Short Introduction to Multilingualism (Oxford University Press), Humanism and British Football (Chuo Koron).
