Biography

Professor Jalal Omer Atoum is currently a visiting professor of Computer Science at Southern Arkansas University. He received his B.S. degree in Computer Science from Yarmouk University, Jordan in 1984, his Master’s degree in Computer Science from the University of Texas at Arlington, USA in 1987, and his Ph.D. in Computer Science from the University of Houston - USA in 1993. He worked as an Assistant Professor at Yarmouk University, Jordan from 1993 to 1995. He was then appointed at Princess Sumaya University for Technology (PSUT) in Sept. 1995 as an Assistant Professor of Computer Science. Later at PSUT, he was appointed as the Head of the Computer Science Department, before being made Dean of the School of Computing Sciences, then becoming Vice President of Administrative Affairs. Also, he served from 2001 to 2009 as Assistant Dean/Coordinator (part time) of the Computer Science and Engineering Department at NYiT (New York Institute of Technology, Amman, Jordan). He has supervised or co-supervised several students on their Ph.D and MS dissertations as well as numerous undergraduate graduation projects. He was a member of the Information Technology and Communication Committee in the Scientific Research Support Fund, Ministry of Higher Education and Scientific Research 2012-2013. Professor Atoum was an IT Consultant for the Minister of Education (Jordan) 2010-2012 and an IT Consultant for the Social Security Corporation (Jordan) 2010 to the present time. He has been involved in several committees for degree programs, having proposed and developed the Master’s program in Information System Security and Digital Criminology at PSUT. He participated in and led a team of CS faculty members that prepared and maintained the ABET accreditation of the Computer Science program. Finally, his research interests include Databases, Data Mining, Artificial Intelligence, Distributed Systems, and Arabic Natural Language Processing.
