Biography
Dr. Nermeen Abdelbary, QED’s Programs Coordinator, is a human rights activist and researcher who has worked at both governmental and nongovernmental organizations, most notably leading a women’s rights portfolio in Egypt. Dr. Abdelbary regularly attended the annual Commission on the Status of Women sessions at the United Nations Headquarter, as well as other international and national conferences on women and children’s human rights. She has also had numerous media appearances. After the Arab spring, Dr. Abdelbary served as the Human Rights Coordinator at the Egyptian Presidency in 2012. She led the drafting of laws that ensure the implementation of human rights principles in Egyptian culture, including policies on NGOs and the right to gather and demonstrate. Dr. Abdelbary is a physician with a PhD in Medical Sciences from Cairo University. She has worked as an Assistant Professor in the Biochemistry Department at Cairo University for four years. Dr. Abdelbary was a board member and the head of the Programs Development Department at Bedaya Foundation, a not-for-profit organization, working on women and youth skills development.
