Biography

He gained his degrees in BEng-Mechanical Engineering and PhD from the University of Liverpool, U.K. Before joining NTU in 1990, he spent 9 years in the UK nuclear power engineering industry specializing in reactor structural and dynamic analyses and high temperature pressure system components design and plant life assessments. His first job was as a stress analyst with the National Nuclear Corporation PLC (now AMEC) supporting the design substantiation of plant structural integrity for design basis loadings anticipated during plant lifetime of core thermal shielding components in the new build Advanced Gas Reactors (AGR) Subsequently, he trained for the structural dynamic analysis for the Postulated Loss of Coolant Accident (LOCA) for the UK Pressurised Water Reactor (PWR) at the Westinghouse Nuclear Energy Center at Pittsburgh, USA. Prior to his return to Singapore, he served a period of 2 years at the Nuclear Electric (now British Energy) as first engineer providing supporting structural integrity analysis to engineering and safety engineering/analysis submissions during plant outage to ensure continued operation of nuclear plant. He is a UK Chartered Engineer, Member of IMechE and a Singapore registered Professional Engineer currently serving in the examinations committee of the Singapore Professional Engineer’s Board. He is recipient of two Best Paper Awards.

Research Interest

His early research interests have been in analysis and design of high temperature structures and pressure systems components including pressure vessels and piping design and analysis, fracture mechanics and defect assessment. Currently, his research focused on experimental, diagnostics, CFD modeling and simulation of plasma sprayed deposition of coatings for thermal barrier, SOFC fuel cells and other industrial applications.
