Biography

Professor Norman Williams is a leading honorary consultant at Barts Health NHS Trust. He trained in London, Bristol, Leeds and Los Angeles. His main clinical interests are sphincter preservation and reconstructive colorectal surgery, and his scientific interests are concentrated on GI motility and anorectal physiology. As Professor of Surgery and Director of Innovation, he was instrumental in the running of a number of pilots that brought together medical technology companies and the NHS to develop new products and ways to deliver surgical care. One of the most exciting projects he presided over was looking at how to prevent patients needing a permanent colostomy. Professor Sir Norman Williams was President of the Royal College of Surgeons between July 2011 and July 2014. He is also Professor of Surgery and Director of Innovation at Queen Mary’s School of Medicine and Dentistry, Director of the National Centre for Bowel Research and Surgical Innovation and Co-Clinical Director of the National Institute for Health Research (NIHR) Enteric Bowel Function Healthcare Technology Cooperative.
