Biography

The Orthopaedic Surgery being part of the University Malaya Medical Centre plays a major role in management of patients who are channelled from walk-in clinics, the accident and emergency unit, primary care clinics and other specialist clinics, and referred from practitioners elsewhere , both general practitioners and specialists. The department has played a major role in the development of Orthopaedic Surgery in the country, having pioneered several new treatments and operations over the years.   Our staff comprise of academic staff, technical staff and administrative staff who work together to perform the departments' functions as efficiently as possible.   The academic staff who have postgraduate qualifications in Orthopaedic Surgery also super-specialise so that each given field in Orthopaedics has a high level of expertise available. The junior academic staff members begin by rotating through each subspecialty and after gaining some experience are encouraged to select a field which is suitable to them. The academic staff teach both postgraduates and undergraduates, manage patients and perform research in a field which interests them. They also perform all the administrative duties which are required, for instance, sit on various subcommittees for UMMC, organize examinations and continuing medical education.   The technical staff consists of laboratory technologists, who assist in laboratory, clinical research and teaching. They also assist in the running of examinations and upkeep of laboratories.   The administrative staff and support staff run the day to day administrative duties of the department and handle all correspondence coming in. All courses, examinations, lectures, employment matters, making of operations lists, dealing with leave, and unavoidable last minute replacement are dealt by them.
