Biography
Yik completed both his undergraduate and postgraduate training at University of Malaya, Kuala Lumpur in 1998 and 2005, respectively. He has worked as Clinical Fellows at Royal Children’s Hospital, Melbourne (December 2008 to July 2012) and Women’s and Children’s Hospital, Adelaide (July 2012 to January 2013) to consolidate his training as a Paediatric Surgeon. In March 2013, he was conferred his Ph.D. by University of Melbourne, Australia, for his thesis on Chronic Constipation in Children and The Roles of Nuclear Transit Scintigraphy (NTS) and Transcutaneous Electrical Stimulation (TES) therapy. He has transferred his knowledge and expertise back to Malaysia with the improvement of care for children with chronic constipation and introduced the use of a new laxative (movicol) to Malaysian children suffering with chronic constipation. He recently started his research on studying the patterns of gastrointestinal transit in Malaysian children with chronic constipation with the introduction and development of Whole Gastrointestinal Transit in children with the use of scintigraphy, which has improved the understanding of gastrointestinal dysmotility as the cause for chronic constipation. His main area of interest is in Surgical Gastroenterology, particularly in treating children with chronic constipation (Hirschsprung disease & non-Hirschsprung) and cholestatic jaundice. He has published extensively in this area and has been invited to present his works at numerous conferences, both nationally and internationally. He is also trained and experienced in minimally invasive surgery, i.e. laparoscopy and thoracoscopy in both neonates and infants. He has succesfully performed numerous laparoscopic pull through in neonates and infants with Hirschsprung disease and thoracoscopicprocedures (repair of congenital diaphragmatic hernia and lobectomy for congenital pulmonary airways malformation) in neonates as well as infants. He also performed laparoscopic herniotomy for children with inguinal hernia with excellent outcomes. He has pioneered the first innovative biliary diversion surgery for a child with Progressive Familial Intrahepatic Cholestasis (PFIC), with great relief of her pruritic symptom and much improved quality of life, avoiding the need for liver transplant. He also has treated many children with anorectal malformation, with early recognition of the condition, careful delineation of the anatomical abnormality with early corrective surgery and with improved outcomes. He has also used his skills to perform laparoscopic appendicostomy to administer antegrade continence enema (ACE) for chiildren with intractable chronic constipation. He is also the expert in dealing with complex neonatal congenital malformations and emergencies.
