Biography

Kulwindr Kaur a/p Gurdial Singh is the fifth child in a family of eleven.  Her father is an ex-police sergeant.  She completed her primary education from Standard 1-3 in Tanah Ratah, Cameron Highlands and her Standard 4-6 in Ipoh, Perak.  She completed her secondary education in Raja Perempuan Secondary School in Ipoh, Perak where she passed and obtained her L.C.E and M.C.E certificates.  She did her Form Six in Anglo-Chinese Secondary School in Ipoh, Perak where she obtained her H.S.C. certificate.  Her undergraduate degree was completed in University Kebangsaan Malaysia, Bangi, Selangor.  She did her Master's and PhD on a part-time basis at the Faculty of Languages and Linguistics from 1994-2004.  Kulwindr Kaur a/p Gurdial Singh has a PhD in Translation, Master's in English as a Second Language and a B.A. (Hons.) in TESL.  She has taught in the primary, secondary and tertiary levels.  She has a vast teaching experience and her expertise lies in Translation, TESL and Error Analysis.  She has done a lot of research and has presented papers at various national and international conferences in Malaysia.  She has published eight books and various articles in refereed journals and as chapters in books.  She has also been active in the University Women's Association (UWA) in UM where she is now the secretary.  She is also a member of MELTA, Persatuan Bahasa Moden and Academic Association of University of Malaya.  Presently, she is a Senior Lecturer at the English Language Department, Faculty of Languages and Linguistics, University of Malaya.  Besides teaching, she supervises postgraduate students at the master's and PhD level.  She has a warm personality and believes in working in a spirit of goodwill.

Sociolinguistics (pragmatics, English for Specific Purposes, register) Language Learning and Assessment (Second Language Learning, Language testing) Translation (process of translating, translation models, translation processes, translation strategies, think-aloud protocols) Tesl (teaching-learning, listening, speaking, reading, writing, vocabulary, grammar) Error Analysis (types of errors, mistakes, contrastive analysis, local errors, global errors, frequency of errors etc.)
