Biography
Dr. Lim Shen-Yang is a Consultant Neurologist and Professor at the University of Malaya, Kuala Lumpur. He runs a very busy government clinic and private practice and sees many patients (around 70+ every week) with Parkinson’s and other Movement Disorders. Dr. Lim earned his medical and research doctorate degrees from Melbourne University, and was admitted to Fellowship of the Royal Australasian College of Physicians after completing advanced training in adult Internal Medicine and Neurology in Melbourne. He trained in Parkinson’s & Movement Disorders at world-renowned centres in Melbourne and Toronto. Dr. Lim has numerous publications (60+) in prestigious medical journals and book chapters (e.g., published by Oxford/Cambridge University Press). He is an Associate Editor of Neurology Asia, and a regular Reviewer for several neurology journals, including Parkinsonism & Related Disorders and Movement Disorders. He serves on the International Parkinson’s & Movement Disorder Society (MDS; this is the main international body representing health care professionals and scientists in this field) Task Force for Parkinson’s Treatment Guidelines, and is the Education Committee Chair and Secretary-Elect of the MDS (Asian-Oceanian section). He has a strong commitment to teaching and has organized or participated as a Speaker in numerous teaching courses on Parkinson’s & Movement Disorders, locally and abroad (in the United States, Canada, United Kingdom, Germany, Australia, Japan, Singapore, China, India, South Korea, Hong Kong, Taiwan, Thailand, Indonesia, Philippines, Sri Lanka, Brunei, Myanmar, and United Arab Emirates), and has been appointed MDS Visiting Professor and MDS Ambassador. He is a Medical Advisor to the Malaysian Parkinson’s Disease Association (MPDA; this is the largest and oldest community/support organization for Parkinson's patients and caregivers in Malaysia), and a founding member (and current Chair) of the Malaysian Movement Disorder Council (MDC; this the main professional body representing clinical experts in this field in Malaysia). He was part of the 4-strong team representing Malaysia that beat 13 other national teams to win the Tournament of the Minds at the 19th World Congress of Neurology in 2009, and has held the prestigious position as Expert Panellist for the Video Challenge event at the 19th MDS Congress in the United States in 2015. A Parkinson’s & Movement Disorders Specialist has expertise in: Parkinson’s and related disorders such as multiple system atrophy (MSA) and progressive supranuclear palsy (PSP), tremor (shaking), gait (walking) disorders, and a variety of other movement problems such as dystonia (involuntary muscle pulling), tics/Tourette syndrome, facial spasm; and specialized treatments such as botulinum toxin (Botox) injections, deep brain stimulation (DBS) and apomorphine (APO-go) infusion.
