Biography
Datuk Professor Dr LOOI Lai-Meng (PJN, JSM, SIMP, MBBS, MD, FRCPath, FRCPA, MIAC, FAMM, FASc, FAMS) is UM’s Distinguished Professor and Senior Consultant Histopathologist to its Medical Centre. She studied medicine at University Singapore, trained in Anatomical Pathology at UM, Royal Postgraduate Medical School (UK) and Brigham and Woman’s Hospital, Boston, USA and defended her doctorate at UM. She attained the Professorial Chair of Pathology (UM) at age 36 and has served as Department Head, Deputy Dean (Postgraduate), Chairman Medical Centre Research Committee, Chairman Medical Ethics Committee, and Representative Malaysian Medical Council. She has been honoured visiting Professor to Harvard Medical School, Foundation Fellow and Academician of Academy Sciences Malaysia, recipient of National Science Award and ASEAN Outstanding Scientist Award. She is Editor-in-Chief of Malaysian Journal of Pathology, and has served on International Editorial Advisory Boards of Pathology, Journal of Pathology, Human Pathology and Histopathology. She is Fellow and Examiner of both Royal Colleges of Pathologists, UK and Australasia (RCPA), and has served as Malaysian Councillor to the RCPA. She is past-President of College of Pathologists, Academy Medicine Malaysia, and was instrumental in development of pathology laboratory accreditation standards for Malaysia, the Pathology Act and several National guidelines on pathology and laboratory practices. In 2010 she was honoured Distinguished Fellow of RCPA and Inaugural Profesor Ulung Negara. She co-chairs the InterAcademy Medical Panel, a global network of National Sciences and Medical Academies which provides evidence-based advice to governments on health issues, and is President of World Association of Societies of Pathology and Laboratory Medicine. Her publications include >180 peer-reviewed papers on amyloidosis, nephropathology and oncopathology with WOS H-index of 19 and >1600 citations. She is devoted to promoting a research and ethical culture among researchers, has delivered >300 guest lectures and conducts regular scientific writing workshops nationally and internationally.
