Biography

Dr Nurjaanah @ Chew Li Hua led the Legal Pluralism & Indigenous Law Research Group and is a Senior Lecturer at the Faculty of Law, University of Malaya. Her areas of interest ranges from insurance law and financial regulation on the private law/ commercial area to public health laws & related issues, administration of criminal justice & ethics, cybercrimes, privacy & data protection law & issues, conversion issues and laws & policies governing indigenous peoples & related issues on the public law domain. She was the first Masters student at the Faculty of Law, UM who explored and discussed medico-legal issues in the context of HIV & AIDS in Malaysia in the early 1990s. Her contribution in the public health area includes the research & formulation of the teaching module on Public Health Laws for the Masters in Public Health, Dept. Of Social & Preventive Medicine, Faculty of Medicine and the formulation of Risk Communication Training Module for Facilitators for the Public Health Institute, Ministry of Health. Her expertise has been sought in numerous consultancies including Workplace Policy on HIV/AIDS, Application of CEDAW in Malaysia, Protection of and Redress for Victims of Abuse of Police Powers in Malaysia and The Baseline Study on the Working Conditions of Women Lawyers in KL & Selangor. She is also currently an expert member and a senior assessor of the Malaysian Qualifications Agency and an active panel member of the Bar Council’s Advocates & Solicitors Disciplinary Board.
