Biography
Dr Suseela Yelumalai obtained a Bachelors degree in Biotechnology from University College Sedaya International (Malaysia) in 2007 and Masters degree (by research) in Medical Sciences (Obstetrics and Gynaecolg) from the University of Malaya (Malaysia) in 2011. Upon completion of her Masters degree, Dr Suseela received prestigious scholarship from the University of Malaya and the Ministry of Education (Malaysia) to pursue her DPhil degree in the Nuffield Department of Obstetrics and Gynaecology (NDOG), University of Oxford under the supervision of Dr. Kevin Coward. Dr Suseela's DPhil research predominantly involved investigating the potential effects of iatrogenic damage incurred during assisted reproductive technology (ART) upon the expression and function of key sperm proteins. During her DPhil program in Oxford, Dr Suseela published several articles in high impact academic journals, a book chapter, and presented papers at conferences/meetings in the United Kingdom and the United States of America. Dr Suseela was also awarded an academic travel grant from the University of Oxford Examination School during her 1st year to allow her to carry out research in vitro maturation (IVM) in a collaborators laboratory in University of Murcia, Spain. Dr Suseela also won an award for best poster pesentation in NDOG during a department coference in the University of Oxford. Dr Suseela returned to Malaysia in April 2015 and was appointed as a Senior Lecturer in the Department of Obstetrics and Gynaecology under the mentorship of Professor Dr Siti Zawiah Omar. Dr Suseela is actively involved in the supervision, teaching, mentoring undergraduate medical students and postgraduate students under an on-going high-impact research project in the department and Faculty of Medicine. Dr Suseela also incharged of the research laboratory management and biosafety/biosecurity. Furthermore, Dr Suseela performs administrative duties for the postgraduate (by research) students. Currently, Dr Suseela has established a research collaboration with Dr Coward to investigate the role of oocyte activation factor, PLCzeta, in human infertility among Malaysian Community. Dr Suseela has also established several internal collaboration within the University of Malaya, including the Department of Physiology, Department of Molecular Medicine and Department of Medical Microbiology. In general, Dr Suseela majored in the field of Reproductive Biology and Human Infertility, with particular interest upon investigating male factor infertility and sperm function. In addition, Dr Suseela's research also predominantly aims to investigate factors contributing to pregnancy complications and to study the structure and function of gametes leading to human infertility.
