Biography
Trained in medicine at the University of Queensland, followed by attachments at Diabetes and Endocrinology units at Newcastle-upon-Tyne where I obtained the MRCP (UK) in 1989. Submitted a thesis on regulation of hypothalamic function in diabetes and awarded a PhD by the University of Wales in 1993. Since returning from the UK in 1993, has been involved in the treatment of patients with diabetes and endocrine problems at the UM Medical Centre and involved in research, both basic and clinical, in the field of diabetes and endocrinology. My research was funded by both IRPA grants and pharmaceutical companies. Recently awarded an IRPA Prioritised Research grant in the field of Diabetic vasculopathy amounting to RM3.3 million. Appointed as Deputy Dean (Research) in 2000, I have been involved in the management of research both at the national level, as a member or the IRPA Technical Committee for Prioritised research, and have been involved in the evaluation of research grant applications for this category in IRPA and National Biotechnology Directorate. At the University level, I am the Director of the Clinical Investigation Centre at the UM Medical Centre, coordinating all the clinical research activities at the Hospital. I have also developed an interest in the application of ICT in healthcare and am the head of the IT Unit at the UM Medical Centre, coordinating the setting up of an integrated Total Hospital Information System at the hospital. As Deputy Dean (Undergraduate and Diploma Programs) from 2004 to 2006, I have been involved in managing the undergraduate programmes (MBBS, Nursing, Pharmacy and Biomedical Science) and the Diploma programmes at UMMC (Nursing, Radiography and Medical Lab Technology). I have introduced several systems to improve the handling of clinical examinations and processing the marks for examinations in the MBBS programmes. In September 2006, I was appointed Dean of the Faculty of Medicine, and was concurrently appointed the Director of the UM Medical Centre. I have been awarded fellowships of various professional organisations (Royal College of Physicians of Edinburgh, the American College of Endocrinology and the Academy of Medicine of Malaysia).
