Biography

Onn Haji Hashim received his BSc Hons degree from University of Malaya in September 1984, and PhD from University of Glasgow in December 1987. He joined the academic staff of University of Malaya in January 1988, and is currently Professor grade VK5 at the Department of Molecular Medicine. During the tenure, Onn has undertaken sabbatical leave to conduct research at University of Osaka Medical School Japan in 1991, and University of Alabama at Birmingham USA in 1994, under sponsorships of JSPS Fellowship and American Fulbright Award, respectively. He is recipient of the National Academic Award 2007 in the category of Publication of Journal Article, and was appointed Visiting Professor at Prince of Songkla University, Thailand, in 2016 and 2017. Onn has acted as External Examiner of biochemistry programmes of MBBS/MD/BDS courses of ten different universities, and External Examiner of PhD/MSc theses from six different universities, including those from Singapore and India. He has supervised 12 PhD and 13 Master’s students to successful completion and delivered more than 50 guest lectures, locally and internationally. His current research interest is in proteomics, particularly in the use of lectin-based techniques in search of novel glycopeptide biomarkers in serum, urine and saliva samples from patients with different cancers. Onn is currently an Editorial Board Member of Biomarker Research and Head of University of Malaya Centre for Proteomics Research.
