Puteri Shafinaz Akmar Binti Abdul Rahman
ASSOCIATE PROFESSOR
DEPARTMENT OF MOLECULAR MEDICINE
University of Malaya
Malaysia
Biography
Associate Prof Dr. Puteri Shafinaz Abdul Rahman received her tertiary education at the University of Malaya. After completing her B.Sc and M.Sc in Biochemistry, she was awarded by the Commonwealth Scholarship and Fellowship Commission, United Kingdom; a Split-site Doctorate scholarship to pursue her Ph.D. (Proteomics) at the Nottingham Trent University and University of Malaya. She completed her Ph.D. in 2007 and shortly after joined the Department of Molecular Medicine as a senior lecturer. She was promoted to be an associate professor in January 2015. As a proteomics scientist, her research mainly focuses on analyses of sera from cancer patients to search for biomarkers that could be utilised for detection of cancers at an early stage. She was acknowledged for her work on proteomics of gynaecological cancer when she was chosen as the first prize winner of the coveted Merck Young Scientist Award in 2008. Apart from laboratory studies, she is also the Head of Central Research Lab Unit and the Manager for Medical Biotechnology Laboratory which are facilities that host the Faculty of Medicine’s state-of-the-art equipment for proteomics and genomics research. Associate Prof Dr. Puteri is also serving as Deputy Dean for Innovative Technology Research Cluster (ITRC) at the University of Malaya. Current Research Interest: ·Characterisation of serum glycoproteins using lectins and mass spectrometry-based analyses to identify tumour associated carbohydrate antigens which could be developed as potential diagnostic and prognostic biomarkers. ·Proteomic profiling milk fat globule associated protein/glycoproteins across animal species as well as metabolomics profiling of human milk. ·Application of proteomics technologies for studies on natural products and herbal medicine.
Research Interest
Molecular Biology (Gene cloning, Recombinant protein expression and purification) Proteomics, Glycoproteomics (Cancer proteomics, Disease biomarkers, Natural plant products, Human and mammalian milk proteome) Proteomic Technologies (Gel based and non-gel based proteomics, Protein and glycoprotein expression profiling, Mass Spectrometry of proteins and peptides, protein identification)
