Biography
I graduaterd with MBBS degree from University of Malaya in 1981. After a year of housemanship I joined the dept of ophthalmology, University of Malaya in 1982 to pursue my training in ophthalmology. In 1983 i passed the part 1 examinations of the Royal Australasian College of Surgeons(FRACS) and also the american VQE. In 1986 I left for UK to continue my training in ophthalmology and in the same year i passed the part examinations of the Royal College of Surgeons(FRCSE). In 1987 I left for USA to do a fellowship under two world reknown paediatric ophthalmologists and strabismologists, Professoer Dr Eugene Helveston and Professor Dr Daryl Ellis at the Indiana University. In 1993 I was becoame a Fellow of the Royal College of Ophthalmologists (FRCOphth). i am also a Fellow of the American Associaton of Pediatric Ophthalmology and Strabismus (AAPOS) and member of the International Strabismus Association (ISA). My cliniical area of expertise includes paediatric ophthalmology, strabismus, phacoemulsification cataract surgery, cornea and anti vascular endothelial growth factor(VEGF) treatment. My reserach interests include polymerase chain reaction and its application in ophthalmology, antibiotics and external corneal diseaes, genetics, inflammatory markers of ocular diseases, effect of of anti VEGF on Human Tenon Fibroblast and retinal vascular changes in various ocular diseases. Besides clinical work and research I am extensively involved in the training of ophthalmologits in this country. I have more than 75 peer reviewed publications to date and some of my articles have been published in top ophthalmology journals including American Journal of Ophthalmology, Journal of Cataract and Refractive surgery, Investgative Ophthalmology Visual Sciene and Ophthalmology. Five of my postgraduate students have obtained distinctions for their thesis. I am a reviewer for Moleular Vision, BMC Cancer, BMC ophthalmology, IOVS, Neurology Asia, Asia Pacific Journal of Public Health and IJO. I am also an Editoral board member of Intenatinal Jounal of Ophthalmlogy. Am a recipient of the University of Malaya Excellence award thrice. In 2016 was given an achievement award by Asia Pacific Academy of Ophthalmology. I have done many charity ad teachng projects in my field for international organisations suach as Christofoel Blinder Mission(CBM). It has included countries as diverse as Paraguay, Papua New Guinea, Belize, Eat Timur, Myanmar and North West Frontier, Pakistan. I am a patron of The International Eye Foundation based in Netherlands. I am currently a consultant for ORBIS and have coedited their refraction manual. I have also done teaching slides which have been posted on their website as part of the e learning programme. I am also International Paediatric Ophthalmology and strabismus council member for Malaysia.
